UHMWPE and HMWPE polyethylene panels for industrial use

In an increasingly demanding industrial environment, choosing the right material makes the difference between a component that lasts and one that fails. Among high-performance technical plastics, UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) and HMWPE (High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) stand out as two of the most versatile and reliable solutions on the market. At Durplastics, we work with both materials every day, and we know exactly what makes them special.

What are PE-UHMW and PE-HMW?

Both materials belong to the polyethylene family, but differ in their molecular weight, which directly determines their mechanical properties and performance in demanding applications.

PE-HMW (High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) features longer molecular chains than conventional polyethylene, resulting in greater wear resistance, good chemical resistance and an excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio. It is a solid option for applications requiring durability without the need to reach maximum performance levels.

PE-UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) takes this concept to the extreme. With a molecular weight that can exceed 6 million g/mol —far above standard polyethylene— it offers properties that place it among the highest-performing plastic materials in the world:

  • Exceptional wear resistance, comparable to some steels in continuous friction applications.

  • Very low coefficient of friction, making it an ideal material for guides, slides and dynamic contact surfaces.

  • Impact resistance at low temperatures, even below −200 °C.

  • Food-contact compliance, meeting European regulations and FDA standards.

  • Chemical inertness, with high resistance to acids, bases, solvents and oils.

  • Low weight, approximately eight times lighter than steel.

Industrial Applications: Where These Materials Make a Difference

Thanks to their unique combination of properties, UHMWPE and HMWPE are present in a wide range of sectors.

In the food industry, they are used in cutting boards, conveyors, chain guides and hopper liners in direct contact with the product, thanks to their non-toxicity and ease of cleaning.

In the naval industry, they are the benchmark material for fenders, mooring guides and harbour protection elements, due to their resistance to marine corrosion and repeated impacts.

In mechanical and chemical engineering, linings for silos, chutes and hoppers made from these polyethylene sheets drastically reduce abrasion wear and exposure to aggressive chemical agents.

In medical and orthopaedic technology, its biocompatibility makes it a reference material for prostheses, implants and parts in contact with bodily fluids.

In leisure and sport, their outdoor resistance and UV protection make them ideal for playgrounds and urban furniture.

UHMWPE and HMWPE in Sheet and Rod Format: Versatility as an Advantage

One of the great advantages of these materials is their transformability. At Durplastics we manufacture UHMWPE and HMWPE sheets tailored to the dimensions and tolerances each project requires. This allows our clients to receive the material exactly prepared for their application, reducing production times and optimising costs.

We work with both standard formats and fully bespoke solutions, responding to specific technical requirements of thickness, length, colour or surface finish.

Why Choose Durplastics for Working with These Materials?

With more than 25 years of experience in the manufacture and machining of technical plastics, at Durplastics we do not just supply material: we advise, dimension and support each client in selecting the most suitable material for their specific application. Our quality system, certified under ISO 9001, guarantees the traceability and consistency of every piece leaving our facilities.

If your project requires extreme wear resistance, lightness, chemical inertness or food-grade compliance, UHMWPE or HMWPE may be the answer. And at Durplastics, we have the formats, the expertise and the production capacity to make it happen.
