ISO 50001: the energy efficiency certification driving Durplastics forward

In an industrial context where efficiency and sustainability are no longer optional, having a certified energy management system makes a real difference. The ISO 50001 standard establishes the requirements for organisations to continuously improve their energy performance, reduce costs and minimise their environmental impact. At Durplastics, this certification is another part of our commitment to more responsible and intelligent production.

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines the requirements for implementing, maintaining and improving an Energy Management System within an organisation.

Unlike other standards that focus on the product or on quality processes, ISO 50001 focuses on how a company consumes, controls and optimises energy across all its operations. Its structure follows the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) continuous improvement cycle, the same approach that underpins standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, making it easier to integrate into existing management systems.

How is ISO 50001 certification obtained?

The certification process involves several steps that require organisational commitment and a long-term vision:

  • Initial energy diagnosis. The company identifies its significant energy uses: which processes consume the most energy, which have the greatest potential for improvement and which energy performance indicators define the starting point.

  • Definition of objectives and action plans. Based on the diagnosis, specific improvement targets are established and plans are designed to achieve them, assigning responsibilities, resources and deadlines.

  • System implementation. Procedures are documented, the teams involved are trained and the identified efficiency measures are put into action.

  • Internal audit and management review. Before requesting external certification, the organisation internally verifies that the system is working correctly and that results are moving in the intended direction.

  • Certification audit by an accredited body. An independent third party assesses the implemented system and, if it complies with the requirements of the standard, issues the certificate. It is valid for three years, with annual surveillance audits.

What ISO 50001 brings to Durplastics and to our customers

Obtaining and maintaining this certification is not an administrative formality. It is the result of real work in analysis, planning and improvement that generates tangible benefits at multiple levels.

  • Reduced energy costs. Identifying and eliminating inefficiencies in energy consumption directly translates into lower operating costs, strengthening Durplastics’ competitiveness and, consequently, that of its customers.

  • More controlled and predictable processes. ISO 50001 requires energy consumption to be measured, recorded and analysed systematically. This creates in-depth knowledge of production processes that goes beyond energy and contributes to more stable and efficient operations.

  • Verified commitment to sustainability. In a market where ESG criteria — environmental, social and governance — increasingly influence purchasing decisions and supplier relationships, having an internationally recognised certification provides credibility and transparency.

  • Greater trust for customers and partners. The certification sends a clear signal to the market: Durplastics does not merely state its commitment to sustainability; it demonstrates it with evidence audited and verified by third parties.

  • Alignment with regulations and tender requirements. More and more sectors and public administrations require or positively value energy certifications in their procurement processes. Having this certification broadens business opportunities.

Another part of a global commitment

ISO 50001 is not an isolated certificate at Durplastics. It is part of a broader vision that includes ISO 9001 quality management certification, the promotion of the circular economy through recycled materials and the development of sustainable products such as Ecodur, our three-layer sheet with a recycled core.

Every certification, every optimised process and every improvement in resource use is a step towards a technical plastics industry that is more efficient, more responsible and better prepared for the challenges of the future.
